After seeing the moss covered houses in Iceland and Hafsteinn Juliusson's moss rings earlier this week, I wanted to look deeper into the Botanical Art Movement; where plants serve as the medium. Makoto Azuma, a botanical sculptor, did an exhibition titled "Time of Moss" at Milan Design Week in 2009. The exhibit featured installations of moss carpets, utilizing a new material called terramac®, which is plant based and entirely biodegradeable.

Also part of this movement is Patrick blanc, the artist behind the "Vertical Garden". He has created a system where plants do not need soil to grow, instead thriving off of a nutrient rich felt and water circulation system. This makes it possible for Blanc to grow plants on any vertical surface, outdoors or inside.
